The Lime Hollow Boys came into existence when vocalist / guitarist John Wolfe called upon fiddler Floyd Sherman to perform an open house engagement at a local farm machinery dealership. The band was an immediate success, and booked several more jobs on the spot. Bassist Ray Gardner joined the band the shortly thereafter. In the summer of 2008 the band welcomed the addition of Andy White on lead guitar.
The band has played some prestigious venues, including multiple daily shows at the 2004, '05, '06 and '07 NY State Fair; shows in 2003, '04 and '06 at the North American Fiddlers' Hall of Fame, and regular performances fairs and community concerts, including the internationally recognized Norwood, NY Village Green Concert Series.
Perhaps the highest recent achievement was the band's 2005, 2006 and 2007 appearances at the Country Music Association’s Fan Fair in Nashville, Tennessee. They were one of only 23 bands selected nationally by audition to perform at the CMA's Acoustic Stage and also at the Gibson Showcase Theater at the Grand Old Opry.
While in Nashville the band performed at Layla's Bluegrass Inn, and Robert's Western World; two of Nashville's famed Broadway Honky-Tonk landmarks. The boys are proud to say that they have a standing invitation to appear at the annual CMA event. They are also pleased to have performed multiple daily shows annually at the historic NY State Fair over the last several years.
The name, The Lime Hollow Boys, comes from an actual location at the junction of the townships of Potsdam, Madrid, and Norfolk, NY. This, the original Lime Hollow, is the site of an abandoned limestone quarry and primitive reduction kiln. This picturesque glade, long overgrown and treed with stately hemlocks, is located on John’s property. Even on the warmest day, the hollow is a cool retreat, and the home of many species of wild creatures, including white tail deer and the occasional Adirondack black bear.
Ray Gardner, on bass, is from the Brasher-Winthrop, NY area. Ray is a tool maker now retired from ALCOA. He has played bass and lead guitar with many well-know bands over the years and played professionally with Floyd in years past. Ray and his wife Barbara have 4 grown children and several grandchildren. Ray and Barb’s children are musical. Ray has played swingin’ acoustic bass since his high school days, and is among the very best in the business. His vocal harmonies and occasional lead adds much to the Lime Hollow Band’s sound. Ray’s bass provides an incredible foundation for the band, and much of the drive for the swing of their music. Ray is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.
Champion Fiddler Floyd Sherman grew up near the Grasse River on the family farm in Madrid, NY. Floyd retired from the NY Dept. of Corrections where he worked as a welder. He resides in West Potsdam, NY. Floyd has a grown son and several grown step children and step grandchildren. Floyd’s composition, The Grasse River Waltz, was the title tune of the band’s 1st compact disc. He has played fiddle and guitar in many popular country bands over the years, most notably, the Ranchmen. Floyd was among the “Liberty Fiddlers” who played for the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial rededication in New York City. He is an antique car enthusiast and skilled restorer.
Andy White is a guitar virtuoso who recently joined the band. Andy is a retired iron worker and has played in bands almost all his adult life, most notably with The Eastern Rhythm Pals and The Thundertones. Andy and his wife Monica reside on the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation Reservation near St. Regis, Quebec. They have three grown children, and many grandchildren.
John Wolfe, the band’s leader, guitarist, and vocalist is retired from 33 years in public education. Their children and grandson are musical. John writes many of the band's songs, including the recent hit "Big Bowl of Chili."
Also member of the world-famous Norwood Brass Firemen, John played on the Whitehouse lawn for 1st lady, Nancy Reagan, played for two US Presidential Inaugurations, and for the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
